iOS 27 Update: Eligible Devices, Features, and Release Date

by Abeer Chawake

Summary

  • Apple's upcoming iOS 27 update is coming this fall
  • While iOS 26 brought a fancy new design language, iOS 27 will focus on stability and new AI features
  • Here's everything coming with the iOS 27 update

If iOS 26 was the flashy update that brought Liquid Glass, then iOS 27 is the one where Apple tries to fix its mistakes. Last year’s iOS was full of bugs and glitches that left many users frustrated. Now, Apple’s reputation for making reliable software is on the line. To win back users’ trust, Apple is shifting its focus away from experimental designs and back to AI features and system stability. They have a few surprises ready that could prove the “it just works” era isn’t over. Here’s everything you need to know about the iOS 27 update, eligible devices, features, and release date.

iOS 27 Update: Eligible Devices, Features, and Release Date

iOS 27 Features

1. Smarter Siri

Apple has been teasing the arrival of a Smarter Siri since 2024, and two years later, we might actually get it. To get it running, Apple has partnered with Google to use a custom model of Gemini. Here’s everything coming with the new Siri later this year

  • New Siri App: Siri is no longer just another chatbot. It now has a dedicated app just like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude. With this app, you can use voice or text to chat with Siri. It will remember previous conversations, and you can even search for them. These convos will be just like the ones in iMessage with chat bubbles on both ends. Other options include the ability to favourite chats and export them.
  • Redesigned Interface: Siri is also getting a makeover with the iOS 27 update. It will have cool animations prompting you to ask questions and queries. Apple is also integrating it into the Dynamic Island with a glowing icon when Siri is busy completing your queries.
  • Choose your own chatbot: The new Siri isn’t limited to just Gemini or ChatGPT. In fact, you can choose your favourite AI chatbot, such as Claude or Perplexity. Called Siri Extensions, this feature will be available as a part of Apple Intelligence. You can even select which services to use. This will be available with the Extensions section in the Appstore, acting as a marketplace for third-party integrations.
  • Contextual Awareness: Siri is now contextually aware and can keep track of your personal files, emails, photos, and more. For instance, you ask Siri for last year’s Malaysia trip photos with your friends, and it will open them up.
  • Image Generation: Siri is rumoured to get image generation capabilities just like ChatGPT and Gemini.
  • Integration with apps: Siri is likely to be integrated with Apple’s system apps like Mail, Messages, Apple TV, Xcode, and Photos. You can ask Siri to perform tasks such as getting directions to a place on Apple Maps and sharing it with your friends. It will also be able to move files within apps, edit photos and share them with your friends, draft an email, and send it to your friends.

2. Apple Intelligence That Actually Works

We first saw a glimpse of Apple Intelligence two years ago at WWDC. Although it hasn’t quite materialized the way Apple saw it. With the iOS 27 update, we could see Apple catch up with the competition with these new features:

  • Calendar app: The iOS 27 update is likely to introduce a new calendar app with AI features
  • Health+ subscription: Apple is also planning to introduce a Health+ subscription that relies on AI. It can analyze your health reports, provide wellness tips, and explain medical conditions.
  • Scan Food Nutrition Levels: You will be able to scan food nutrition levels to track calorie levels in your food. This data will also be synced with the health app for better tracking.
  • Scan Phone Numbers: With the OS 27 update, you can scan printed phone numbers and addresses and save them to the contacts app.
  • Better Visual Intelligence: Apple is also planning to integrate Visual Intelligence in the Camera app with a new Siri mode. Currently, it can be accessed via the Control Center.
  • Store Passes in Apple Wallet: With Apple Intelligence, you will be able to convert your physical pass into digital ones and store them in Apple Wallet. This way you store your gym membership, event tickets, reward cards, and more.
  • Tab Categorization in Safari: With Apple Intelligence, you can now categorize multiple tab groups based on their topics in Safari

3. New AI Features In Photos App

Apple will expand its suite of Apple Intelligence features in the Photos app with the iOS 27 update. Apart from the currently available Clean Up feature, Mark Gurman claims Apple is working on these features:

  • Extend: Similar to Canva’s AI Image Expander, you can use generative AI to expand an image beyond its original frame. For instance, if you have captured a photo in front of a waterfall, it can expand the image to fill in the details behind it. You can choose how much of the background it generates by expanding the edges with your fingers.
  • Enhance: Just like Google Photos’ AI Enhance feature, it harnesses the power of AI to improve your image. It modifies the color, lighting, and other aspects to improve the image.
  • Reframe: With the Reframe feature, you can change the perspective of a spatial photo for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. You can change the perspective depending on the view.
  • Clean Up: This existing mode is expected to only get better with the upcoming iOS 27 update.

4. Support for Foldable iPhones

With Apple all set to introduce its first foldable iPhone, it’s only natural to expect support for foldables with the iOS 27 update. You will be able to run two apps side by side just like on an iPad. While it won’t run iPadOS apps, the bigger canvas means developer will need to optimize their apps for the 4:3 aspect ratio.

5. Improved Customization

While iOS 26 introduced Liquid Glass, the iOS 27 update will let you refine it. This should improve the readability of the UI. You will be able to tweak the intensity of Liquid Glass with a dedicated slider. In fact, iOS 26.1 already lets you adjust the Liquid Glass effect of the clock on the lock screen. Apple is also adding new redo and undo buttons when making changes to the homescreen.

6. New Satellite Features

Apple was one of the first to introduce Satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14. This time, with the iOS 27 update, Apple is set to bring a new host of Satellite features in partnership with Globalstar. These rumoured features include Apple Maps in Satellite, the ability to send photos in messages via satellite, satellite connectivity over 5G, and more. Since these features go beyond what’s currently available on iPhone, they might require new hardware.

7. Performance and Stability

With iOS 26 being dubbed the most unstable and buggy iOS release in recent years, iOS 27 wants to fix these issues. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it will be similar to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which focused on stability and performance upgrades. Rather than adding new fancy features, Apple will focus on stability.
