HiOS 17 and XOS 17 Update: Features, Eligible Devices, and Release Date

by Abeer Chawake

Summary

  • Infinix's XOS 17 and Tecno HiOS 17 based on Android 17 are coming later this year
  • Apart from the difference in naming, they are basically the same software skin underneath
  • Here's everything coming with the XOS 17 and HiOS 17 update.

Infinix and Tecno phones might wear different badges, but under the hood, they’re cut from the same cloth-Transsion Holdings, their parent company. With the arrival of Android 17, Infinix’s XOS 17 and Tecno’s HiOS 17 update are set to debut with new features and visual changes. From a dedicated desktop mode to new AI features and multitasking bubbles, here’s everything coming soon to your Infinix and Tecno phone:

HiOS 17 and XOS 17 Update Features

Note: Infinix and Tecno are yet to reveal details for their respective OS, so these features are based on what’s coming in Android 17

1. New AI Features

Ella, the virtual assistant present on Tecno and Infinix phones, could get an upgrade with the HiOS 17 and XOS 17 update. While I don’t expect to replace Gemini, it will have several improvements across the board. We could see an improved Mind Hub and AI Flash Memo features. These features are essentially Transsion’s take on the Mind Space feature found in OnePlus and Oppo phones.

2. Visual Changes

HiOS 17 and XOS 17 update could finally move towards Liquid Glass, just like other Android OEMs. This translucent glass effect will be visible across the quick settings, notification panel, settings, and other apps. With Google officially shifting to translucent design with Android 17, other OEMS are only going to follow suit.

3. Improved Animations And Memory Management

Animations are one area where XOS and HiOS fall behind the competition. With HiOS 17 and XOS 17 update, we could see way smoother animation, especially when opening or closing apps. Another area of improvement could be memory management. Android 17 prevents rogue apps from using up all the memory in the background.

4. Bubbles For Multitasking

While you already have floating windows in Infinix and Tecno phones, the HiOS 17 and XOS 17 update will offer a new way to multitasking with floating bubbles. You can open upto five apps in floating bubbles and toss them aside just like floating windows. It’s a more sophisticated way of multitasking compared to floating windows.

5. Task Continuity

Apple’s ecosystem and seamless connectivity between its device is it’s biggest strength. With XOS 17 and HiOS 17 update, you can sync notifications, calls, and app data across multiple Android devices. This is only if Transsion integrates Android 17’s task continuity feature.

6. Desktop Mode

Desktop mode is something that has been missing on Infinix and Tecno phones. With Google introducing a native desktop mode in Android 17, XOS 17, and HiOS 17 could finally get this feature in an update. Although this is likely to be restricted to flagship phones, letting users connect their phone to an external display for PC like multitasking.

7. Lockscreen Widgets

Android 17 brings support for widgets on the lockscreen, paving the way for skins like XOS 17 and HiOS 17 update to implement them. And it’s not just limited to a handful of widgets; you need to swipe left on the lockscreen to access a dedicated lockscreen widget hub.

8. AirDrop Support In Quick Share

With Google baking in native Airdrop support, Infinix and Tecno phones are set to get an upgrade. With the HiOS 17 and XOS 17 updates, you will be able to share files easily with your iPhone buddies. While you do get a Touch Transfer with iPhone feature on Infinix and Tecno devices, it requires you to install a dedicated app. With native Airdrop support, you don’t need to rely on any app.

Infinix doesn’t explicitly mention the update policy for its phones, but we do know that the support depends on the series that you buy. Interestingly, its flagship Zero, Note, and GT series get 2 years of OS updates, while the budget HOT series gets 3 years of updates.
